Oil Painting Conservation and Restoration
We are experts in restoring Oil Paintings. Old Masters often need to be lined to a new Linen Canvas after years of deterioration. Lining the Oil Painting will strengthen the canvas and repair tears for future generations.
Following on, we can retouch any flaking paint and hide any damaged that may have occurred over the many years of an Work of Art’s lifetime.
We clean dirt and grime from the Oil Painting’s surface, Remove the old yellowed varnish, re varnish using a non yellowing varnish and retouch flaked areas of paint.
Oil paintings often need lining to a new conservation grade canvas, to repair tears and to strengthen the art work for generations to come.
Watercolours and Works on Paper
WORKS ON PAPER are subject to the accumulation of dirt and grime over time. ‘Foxing’ causes orange specks that interfere with the Work of Art’s appearance and worsens if untreated. If the Work of Art has been kept in damp conditions, moulds and stains can deteriorate the paper the artwork is on. The paper or card can also become acidic from past framing techniques and many Watercolours have been mounted to unsuitable non Acid-Free board. This will cause the paper to appear yellow and aged. We have worked on etchings by Picasso (as shown here) and drawings by Whistler among many other celebrated Artists. We also restore Pastel Works of Art.

The Picture Conservation and Restoration Studios have had a long history of restoring and conserving a wide range of works of arts in various mediums. Whether it be pastels on paper, gilt ornate figurines, pottery, Chinese silk screens or photography, we have had past experience in conserving these forms of work. We regularly restore and conserve gold ornate frames.

Our History
Established in 1981 by Garve Hessenberg, The Picture Conservation and Restoration Studios have been Experts in the field of Art Conservation for over forty years. We regularly receive commissions from Private Collectors, Galleries and Insurance Companies. We have also undertaken Conservation and Restoration work for Clarence House, Oxford University, St James Palace and The Royal Military Police.
Camilla Hessenberg trained under her father’s expertise and now runs the business, taking on commissions across the United Kingdom, restoring Oil Paintings, Watercolours and Prints on paper.
